They are not the Three Musketeers or the Three Amigos, but they could be dubbed "The Three Seniors" when all is said and done -- the three men that will be the metaphorical backbone for the No. 5-ranked Penn State men's gymnastics team this season.
Kevin Tan, Zachary Roeder and Duke Van Fleet are the only seniors on a Nittany Lion squad that can consider this weekend's performance against Army and Springfield at the Gross Sports Center in West Point, N.Y., as a springboard into a possibly promising season -- due in great part to the team performance that also included brilliant efforts from Steve Tobin, Luis Vargas, Ed Seward and Chad Buczek.
Tan, who came into Saturday's meet after a sluggishly unproductive week of preparation due to illness, finished first in the parallel bars and tied for first in the still rings.
The first-place finishes and the scores in his vault, floor and pommel horse exercises enabled him to win the all-around individual title with a score of 52.7.
Roeder did his part with dominating routines on the floor and pommel horse that resulted in two first-place finishes.
"[Zac Roeder] just nailed everything," Penn State men's gymnastics coach Randy Jepson said. "He couldn't have performed much better in his events than he did."
Van Fleet, coming off of a redshirt season because of a torn pectoral muscle, performed as well as could be expected after missing a year of competition. His best finish was third-place in the high bars.
"I just wanted him to be able to compete and go through a meet ... go through both his routines clean," Jepson said. "He did a good job of that. ... I think that's the best I've seen him do."
The Lions took first in all events -- floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bars -- for a total of 215.600, beating Army's 206.550 and Springfield's 195.150.
