Wrestling to battle Navy at home

Wrestling vs. Navy

7 p.m. Tomorrow at Rec Hall

The time for allowing injuries to heal is over for the Penn State wrestling team.

After competing in three tournaments and allowing red-shirts and inexperienced wrestlers to participate in some much-needed action, the season kicks into full gear this weekend with the team’s first dual meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow in Rec Hall against a tough Navy squad.

Penn State wrestling coach Troy Sunderland said the team is basically where he thought they would be at this point in the season.

“You never plan on foreseeing injuries, but we’re at about 80 percent of where I thought we would be,” he said.

Penn State got the chance to see multiple Navy wrestlers last weekend when the Lions hosted the BIC Open.

Navy’s Adam Brochetti captured the 149-pound title and Travis Manion took the title at 184. For the Lions, the BIC Open was primarily an opportunity to heal all lingering injuries and begin to prepare for this weekend’s tough match.

The winter break schedule includes matches against No. 6 Lehigh and the Midlands Championships, which will feature some of the country’s best teams like Iowa State and Iowa.

The Lions’ lineup is still not set in stone as questions remain in multiple weight classes, such as 125 and 141.

At 125, it will either be Adam Smith or Matt Smith.

Either Bill Kinder or Eric Armacan will get the nod at 141, while it James Woodall or Jarrad Turner will be stepping on the mat at 157.

Finally, at 174, James Yonushonis and Rich Brooks will battle it out to represent the Lions.
