No offense to the Asian community, but yesterday's Cindy Song article ("Find Dru, why not Cindy," Dec. 11) was the Collegian's worst attempt in recent memory at making a trivial observation sound significant.
Dru Sjodin's publicity is incredibly reasonable, given that her prime kidnapping suspect has already been identified as a convicted rapist recently released from 23 years of jail time. Without a doubt, it is sad that broader solicitation of information leading to Song's recovery was lacking. However, the media forgot about her because there was never any progress to report.
This applies to Professor Kramer's indication that the media, as an entertainer, wants readership. Reports telling of the same lack of information day after day would have lost people's interest. But, if cultural bias does have anything to do with it, then the Collegian's article needed only to question why this bias appears.
Tiffanie Lewis, Black Caucus president, provided an answer immediately: "We want to hear things about the dominant culture." We simply cannot do much to change that, though.
