PSNtv shows give students big breaks

Collegian Staff Writer

Plan on becoming a movie star? For the first time, Penn State is giving its fame-seeking students a chance to show what they've got on television.

Penn State Network Television (PSNtv) has been on the air since mid-October, and those involved feel that the shows on PSView (channel 72 on campus) have come a long way since then, and are looking forward to even more improvements next semester.

"Its been going really well. We have four of the five shows up and running and we're looking forward to expanding next semester with different shows and improved shows," said David Speers (senior-integrative arts), co-president of PSNtv.

The one show that hasn't been running is Academic Integrity, which will be airing next semester. Speers said the producers are looking to do the show with a different angle.

Next semester, one of the new shows that the station will be airing is called Present Tense, which Speers described as kind of like Crossfire. He said the show will feature guests such as Willard preacher Gary Cattell and will cover the Undergraduate Student Government election.

"The sky is the limit. In the beginning we realized the reality of what it takes to run a TV station, but it's going smoothly now. We're always learning and learning more," Speers said.

Mike Koslap (senior-film and video) is the producer of Girls' Night Out, which he said is a sketch comedy show similar to Saturday Night Live skits and the Real World that takes place around campus.

"I think the show has progressed greatly. We're doing about four sketches a week, and we work and learn more each time," Koslap said.

Koslap agreed that running a television station is initially difficult and it takes a lot to get it off the ground, but said the people who have contributed their time and work have made it easier.

"The difference between the first show we ran and the last is just tremendous, and we're looking to make more advances" Jay Pullano (senior-broadcasting), producer of The X-Y Factor, said.

Producers will be holding an open casting for a new hostess for the show to replace graduating Kylee Hornack (senior-telecommunications). The casting call will be held 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and tomorrow on the first floor of the HUB-Robeson Center.

"We're looking for the girl who can battle the guys the best and we're looking for a ton of people to come out," Pullano said.

The station will be narrowing it down so it can have a "finals" contest in the very beginning of next semester.

Those working on PSView all seem to be dedicated to PSNtv and looking forward to next semester.

"It's a lot of work. It's like another three-credit class. But things have been really successful and it's rewarding when I hear people I don't even know mention the shows," said co-president of PSView Zachary Ludescher (junior-film and video).
