Many universities are subscribing to national Web sites that students can use to receive mental health information. Penn State has its own online depression screening, but it is not used as a replacement for one-on-one evaluations, Knapp said.
"Our biggest efforts are our counseling services," Knapp said.
One-third of the students who receive counseling at CAPS are actually diagnosed with depression, Knapp said.
Some students believe adding more programs that focus on suicide prevention would be beneficial to students.
"There could always be more prevention," said Allison Kirsch, a student volunteer at Lion Support.
Students who call Lion Support, a student referral service that operates from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. seven days a week, are sometimes referred to CAPS for further counseling. Occasionally these students are unable to receive appointments and need to call Lion Support again, said Sarah Kepner, a volunteer at Lion Support.
"We have more staff than we used to," Knapp said. But appointments are always filled even as staff is increased, she added.
Other students believe Penn State should advertise resources already available before implementing new programs.
Kevin Busha (sophomore-mechanical engineering) said he is not even aware of the programs presently available for students who are having suicidal ideas.
"Maybe [CAPS] just needs to let people know about what we have," Busha said.
Brian Walsh (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) agreed that Penn State should first advertise its present resources before implementing new ones.
Anonymity is an issue whenever a suicide prevention and depression program is created, Kirsch said, as many students are embarrassed and do not want to attend seminars or classes.
Thirty students attended the depression screening held in the HUB-Robeson Center in October for National Depression Screening Day, Knapp said. This was a good turnout, she said, but attendance varies for programs like that. An annual program about depression in relationships was attended by 15 students one year and 50 another year. There are also freshman seminars and other classes that discuss how to help a friend who is depressed or suicidal, Knapp said.
