On Monday, an elevator in Atherton Hall was once again running, about three days after a student fell to her death down its shaft after it stopped between floors.
Penn State junior Katherine Ibanez fell 40 feet to her death Friday night while trying to escape the elevator, which had stopped between the third and fourth floors.
Penn State spokesman Bill Mahon said state inspectors examined the elevator after the accident. The inspectors found the elevator to be in good condition, leaving the cause of Friday's breakdown unknown.
Meanwhile, some Atherton residents expressed mixed feelings about the elevator reopening.
Kim Kutz (sophomore-history) said she would probably never use the elevator again.
"I only rode the elevator occasionally before, but I noticed it would stop on the wrong floors," Kutz said.
However, Tom He (sophomore-information science and technology), who took the elevator every day before the accident, began riding it again as soon as it was back in operation. Although, he said he is more hesitant now.
Dave Fairchild (sophomore-actuarial science) also said he rode the elevator often before the accident and will continue to use it daily now that it is fixed.
"I'm not bothered, although I have thought about it more now," he said.
Fairchild has, however, noticed some of his fellow residents avoiding the elevator. Mike Helbing (senior-chemical engineering) said he will not use the elevator, but offered different reasons.
"I never rode it before. I've been here for a couple of years and I've known it to break down," he said.
