Lions looking to regroup

Collegian Staff Writer

Jan Jagla warmed up with shots from all over the court, with a steady mix of close-range and perimeter jumpers.

Kevin Fellows stood at the charity stripe, practicing his free throws while discussing the significance of Family Guy.

And with that, it was back to business as usual in the Bryce Jordan Center's south gym yesterday. The Penn State men's basketball team is looking to learn from, rather than forget, Saturday's 64-37 thrashing at the hands of the Pittsburgh Panthers.

"History usually repeats itself if you aren't careful," Penn State men's basketball coach Ed DeChellis said.

DeChellis, for one, should not be forgetting last weekend anytime soon. Penn State's bus ride out west was prolonged due to the snow.

DeChellis, a native of Monaca, was unable to meet with his mother for a visit because time would not allow for the trip.

On top of that, Penn State (3-2) shot 28 percent from the field and tasted realistic devastation for the first time this season.

The coach blamed Penn State's poor play on shoddy offensive execution and an inadequate defensive effort, two facets that the Lions are hoping to correct in its two days of practice before tomorrow's contest against Rutgers.

DeChellis and Penn State have begun watching tape on the Scarlet Knights (3-1), who are led by senior forward Herve Lamizana, a 6'10" three man who creates a significant matchup predicament for Penn State with a large height differential.

"DeForrest [Riley-Smith] is 6'4" and Marlon [Smith] is 6'0", and that's who we have to cover him," DeChellis said.

Notes:

Aaron Johnson, still recovering from detached retina surgery, will have a follow-up evaluation tomorrow, but will be relegated to conditioning drills until cleared for practice.

Last week, DeChellis expressed some hope that "HoJo" would be cleared for practice late this week, but admitted that the sophomore is not quite yet in playing shape due to the surgery and the resulting, doctor-recommended inactive period to recover from the surgery.
