I was shocked and saddened to read about the death of 21-year old Kathy Ibanez ("Student dies in elevator shaft fall," Dec. 8). It was a terribly tragic accident. What disgusted me though was how Penn State handled it. Spokesman Bill Mahon said, "It doesn't appear to be an elevator problem. It appears to be a bad decision." Well done Penn State, you've managed to avoid any and all blame and place it on Ibanez. The elevator stopped in between two floors and somehow it wasn't an elevator problem? Yes, it was a very bad decision, by all the people in the elevator, but Penn State should not escape some blame. Many of the elevators in the dorms are faulty. They stop in between floors frequently and make noises elevators shouldn't make. I'm concerned each time I step in one. We need new elevators in the dorms, plain and simple. Then maybe tragic occurrences like this can be averted.
