The chair of the College Republicans, Brian Battaglia, needs to realize all the time and effort that it has taken Republicans to eradicate the image of being intolerant bigots ("Pictures lead to call for resignations," Dec. 5). President Bush has tried to reach out to minorities through cabinet appointments and outreach programs. One can agree or disagree with the president, but at least some effort is there. Battaglia's actions, whether they were at a private party or not, do more to harm the political party that he represents.
Battaglia can invoke the First Amendment all he wants. He should also read it. It says that Congress can make no law prohibiting free speech. Congress is not involved with this issue. The university is. Battaglia should either step down gracefully or be forced to resign.
