Letter to the Editor
Readers respond to College Republican photographs

I am not one to claim to know much at all about politics, so I won't comment on the resignation process itself ("Pictures lead to call for resignations," Dec. 5). It seems to me, however that there is quite a bit of an unnecessary outcry about a private party unassociated with Brian Battaglia and not sponsored by the Undergraduate Student Government Senate or College Republicans. The pictures of the controversial Halloween costumes on Battaglia's Web site are his own private business. Would you tell people to resign from office for making fun of President Bush or a sodomizing priest for Halloween? I don't agree personally with the costumes, but Battaglia is right; this was a private party meant for social reasons and there is freedom of expression.

If I had the pictures, I would apologize to anyone offended by them, but it would end there. No public apology is needed from anyone. I think this is just another case of the left wingers of Penn State trying to redefine the First Amendment to the way that they like it, as long as they aren't offended.
