Donation solicitors for the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon were stuck in State College this weekend as rough weather and dangerous road conditions caused the cancellation of this year's second planned solicitation, or canning weekend.
The decision was reached early Friday morning after several chairs in the overall committee concluded that it would be unsafe to follow through with their plans.
"We saw the weather got quite ugly," said Seth Moser, rules and regulations chair.
Moser added that the overall committee has a responsibility to keep participating donation solicitors out of a dangerous situation "just for the sake of making money."
Communications chair Lindsay McAviney said the current driving conditions were hazardous enough to make anyone aware of the possible dangers.
"We couldn't take that chance," McAviney said. "If one person got hurt, that would be one too many."
Fehran Frank, Thon spokeswoman, said the overall committee made the right decision to cancel the solicitation weekend.
"Safety comes first, and the well-being of the students," Frank said. "That's why we did it."
Frank said she isn't worried about the possible effects of the lost opportunity to solicit for donations this weekend because they will be rescheduling the weekend trip.
"We canceled a canning weekend last year, and everything went OK," Frank said.
Allison Saras (sophomore-political science), a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, was planning on leaving to solicit Friday afternoon in West Chester.
Saras said she is disappointed that the canning trip was canceled because of the missed opportunity to raise money for a good cause.
"It's a good time, helping out for the kids," she said.
Although she is disappointed, Saras said she understands why the decision was made.
"In a way it was good for safety reasons, but I hope they reschedule," Saras said.
Courtney Poillon (sophomore-marketing), also a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, said that the decision to cancel the weekend is disappointing but understandable.
"My whole heart is into Thon, but there's no way I want to put our lives on the line," Poillon said.
