National record deal not a sign of quality

While Reid Coploff makes a point in saying that the local music scene is somewhat tired due to the overabundance of cover bands ("Stale college scene," Dec. 3), equating major record label success with artistic quality is an insult to all original artists in State College. Even if Penn State never breeds a nationally known act, it doesn't mean its students aren't creating music as good and as valid as anything heard on television or the radio. With style currently dominating mainstream popularity rather than substance, national fame is a poor gauge for quality music. Yet if Coploff lets TRL dictate to him what's valid and successful music, then he should stop looking for a the next great band in Stale College and just pick up the new Britney Spears CD.
