Police seek link in dorm incidents

Collegian Staff Writer

The investigation of Penn State student James Conteh Jr. will continue to determine if he is connected with a string of previous trespassing incidents in McKean Hall, Penn State University Police Supervisor Bill Moerschbacher said.

Moerschbacher said although police are investigating a possible connection between the incidents, Conteh has not been implicated in these other instances.

"He will still have the charge of criminal trespassing, even if he is not connected with the other situations," Moerschbacher said.

Previous trespasses

Nov. 7- A female reported that she was woken up by inappropriate touching at 4 a.m.
Nov. 8- Police receive a report of an incident that occurred on Oct. 25. The victim said an unknown male who matched Conteh's description entered her room.
Nov. 21- Conteh is arrested. Upon his arrest, a woman reported an incident that occurred on Oct. 18 of a man standing in her dorm room.

Conteh, who is accused of entering a female student's McKean Hall room at 3:24 a.m. Friday, will face charges of criminal trespassing. Police will look at the circumstances of Friday's incident, which may connect Conteh to similar incidents in the same dorm, Moerschbacher added.

"We are looking into the possibility of his connection," Moerschbacher said. "It makes sense to see if this individual was involved in other situations."

Tyrone Parham, university police supervisor, said there have been five instances of an unknown individual entering women's dorm rooms in McKean Hall prior to Conteh's arrest.

Penn State spokesman Tysen Kendig said Conteh has been removed from his residence in Stuart Hall and will be referred to the Office of Judicial Affairs to determine his student status.

"Once the student is released from custody, they will be referred to Judicial Affairs," Kendig said. "At this point, Judicial Affairs has received a complaint."

The incident occurred on the second floor of McKean Hall. Penn State police responded and talked to a female who said she saw a suspicious man outside of her door.

According to court documents, she said the suspect was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. She saw him exit the hallway through a stairway door. Police later identified the suspect as Conteh.

Conteh then allegedly entered another room on the second floor. The female said she woke up and saw a black male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt standing over her.

She said the man was looking directly at her face. The woman then grabbed his sweatshirt and prevented him from leaving. When she asked why he was in her room, he said he was looking for an individual named Jenny.

The man broke free from her grasp and ran toward a south stairwell, where he was apprehended after police heard several loud screams.
