EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Maurice Humphrey did not travel with the Penn State football team to Michigan because he broke team rules.
Humphrey was arrested yesterday on charges of aggravated assault after an early morning incident.
The wideout, who led the Nittany Lions in receiving through 11 games with 30 catches, was listed on the travel roster before Penn State's 41-10 loss to Michigan State on Saturday, but was not dressed for the game.
Penn State football coach Joe Paterno did not discuss the specifics of the earlier incident, only saying that Humphrey was scheduled to travel with the team as late as Thursday.
"Humphrey broke a team rule and I'd rather not get into what it was," Paterno said.
Senior offensive tackle Chris McKelvy, who was limited to long-snapping duty in Penn State's 52-7 victory against Indiana, also did not travel with the team. Paterno said it was part of the suspension, which began prior to the game against the Hoosiers, for "cutting classes."
McKelvy started six games at right tackle this season, including five consecutive starts prior to the Indiana game.
Damone Jones started in his place for the last two weeks and gave up three sacks to Michigan State defensive end Greg Taplin on Saturday before being pulled at half time.
Seeing the field, somewhat
With starting returner Maurice Humphrey out of the game Saturday, freshman tailback Austin Scott was rewarded with a spot as the deep man next to Calvin Lowry on the kick return team.
Scott did not return a kick, but made a solid block on Lowry's 22-yard kick-off return at the start of the third quarter.
As a tailback, Scott carried the ball twice for two yards. Both rushes came in the fourth quarter after Michael Robinson, who started at running back, relieved Zack Mills at quarterback.
Scott's fellow freshman tailback Tony Hunt also had two fourth-quarter carries for three yards.
Bandages and crutches
Senior linebacker Gino Capone dressed for Saturday's game, but did not play.
He suffered a knee injury in Penn State's 17-7 loss to Northwestern two weeks ago and has not played since.
Junior wideout Gerald Smith was also held out of the game.
Smith suffered a concussion after making a reception against Ohio State and hasn't dressed since. Paterno said at his weekly press conference on Tuesday that Smith had tried to begin working out on a stationary bike, but got dizzy.
Decisions, decisions
Penn State wideout Ernie Terrell did not travel with the team this weekend because Paterno says he's unsure that the sophomore has decided to focus on football.
Terrell, who also competes for the Penn State track team as a sprinter, has just five catches this season. After starting against Nebraska, he has seen a diminished role in the offense lately and his fall down the depth chart reflects Paterno's uncertainty.
On Saturday, Paterno reiterated comments he made on his radio show Thursday about Terrell's decision.
"Terrell, I'm not sure what he wants to do, whether he wants to be a track man or what," Paterno said.
Starting a whole new journey
Freshman linebacker Paul Posluszny made his first-career start against the Spartans, finishing the game with eight tackles and tipping a pass that was intercepted by Penn State linebacker Deryck Toles in the third quarter.
