There was business to tend to.
"We wanted to get back on track," junior winger Katie King said.
If the Lady Icers' 11-0 thumping of Buffalo Saturday didn't get the job done, yesterday's 10-1 win certainly did.
The wins meant Penn State, now 9-2-1 (6-2 ECWHL), swept the four-game season series with the Freeze.
Penn State also finishes its first-semester home schedule with a 6-0-1 record.
Coach Chris Whittemore was happy with the way his club rebounded from the URI weekend.
"They were a little sluggish [at practice Tuesday] but I think they came around Thursday," he said. "They've been working hard and that's due to them wanting to get to the national tournament."
The Lady Icers were listed third in the East region and ninth nationally in the first ACHA rankings. The top 12 teams will be invited to the national tournament in March at Michigan State.
This weekend, Penn State rebounded by taking advantage of a thin, not-as-talented Buffalo club that had yet to notch a point in its first 13 games.
"These were games we knew we should be winning," said junior winger Alex McVicker, who scored three goals Saturday and added two more yesterday. "We wanted to go out and control the games while not letting up."
Indeed the Lady Icers were in the driver's seat the entire weekend.
In Saturday's game Penn State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first period and never looked back.
The first line of McVicker, King and center Lauren Johnston accounted for four of those goals. Johnston had the first, poking a rebound past Buffalo goalie Marie Hage 49 seconds into the game.
McVicker, King and second-line forward Kate Connolly all had hat tricks for the Lady Icers Saturday.
McVicker's goal with 5:16 left in the game was the prettiest of the night and took a cue from a hockey legend.
McVicker took a feed from King, tapped the puck into the net and flew through the air as Hall of Fame defenseman Bobby Orr did in scoring the goal that clinched the 1970 Stanley Cup championship for the Bruins.
In contrast to Saturday's game, yesterday's matchup was competitive -- for a period.
McVicker scored 1:08 into the first period to give Penn State a 1-0 lead. Buffalo forward Michelle Decker responded with a tally of her own less than 90 seconds later, which would tie the game.
It wasn't until McVicker scored 1:55 into the second period that the Lady Icers took the lead for good.
That six-goal middle stanza allowed Penn State to pull away. King scored two goals in the third period to finish with hat tricks in both games.
Junior defenseman Stephanie Feyock added two goals in the Lady Icers' winning effort.
