Focus has been the word of the month for the Penn State women's swimming and diving team and they showed it on Friday afternoon.
The No. 12 Nittany Lions team defeated St. Bonaventure (6-2) 136-90 at the McCoy Natatorium and improved to 3-1 on the season.
"The women are right on track," Penn State swimming and diving coach Bill Dorenkott said. "They're a little beat up both physically and mentally but we've been staying focused."
The Nittany Lions had a lot of swimmers, including several freshmen, perform well and the wins were spread throughout the team.
They got off to a quick start by winning the first nine events.
Freshman Genie Cheng was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team, while Freshman Megan Palera and Nikki Collins won the 1000- and 200-yard freestyle respectively.
Courtney Stanchock won the 100-yard freestyle.
"It was still a challenge," Stanchock said. "We had some different people stepping up in different places since we switched the lineup around."
The diving team also had a successful afternoon.
"We have a solid foursome of women," Penn State diving coach Craig Brown said. "Saint Bonaventure does not have as much experience but the coach has done an amazing job. They will be very competitive in the Atlantic-10."
Lisa Silvestri finished first in 1-meter diving while Corey Pagnotta finished in second.
"I did pretty well, and I'm pretty happy with my 1-meter performance," Pagnotta said. "But some things need a little tweaking on my 3-meter dives."
Following the win, Dorenkott allowed the players some extra sleep before the next practice but it would soon be back to work to prepare for Tuesday's meet with West Chester.
"As a coach you try to stay away from motivation -- focus is more important," Dorenkott said. "The kids now have computers and cell phones and staying focused is tough. They've been away from home for a while and I think that the break is going to be a good thing."
