After a meeting Friday, no agreement has been reached between Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, 200 E. Beaver Ave., and the Interfraternity Council (IFC) concerning a citation received earlier this semester.
Representatives from Sigma Alpha Epsilon met with IFC officials Friday concerning the citation for five counts of furnishing alcohol to minors.
During the mediation, IFC officials made an offer to Josh Macuga, fraternity president, and Kerry Small, chapter adviser. Neither IFC officials nor members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon would comment on the specifics of the proposal.
"We are going to review their first offer, and we plan to offer a counterproposal," Small said.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon received the citation from police charging the fraternity with five counts of furnishing alcohol to minors on Sept. 27 after a fraternity member called police to the house to treat a 19-year-old Penn State student. "We are proud of the brother who made the call. He did so knowing that some people may use this against him or the fraternity," Small said.
"But he did the right thing and potentially saved her from some unfortunate outcomes."
The woman was found inside the women's restroom of the house, police said. Her eyes were rolled back in her head and she smelled strongly of alcohol, according to the police report.
She had a blood-alcohol content of 0.3 percent, according to police.
"If SAE is punished unreasonably, then it will stop people from doing the right thing," Small said.
Small also said that of the seven citations for furnishing alcohol received by IFC chapters this semester, five of them happened before Sigma Alpha Epsilon's, and he does not understand why the IFC has scheduled this mediation before the others.
"Of the seven similar cases, all but one occurred before SAE," Small said. "Yet not one has been acted on by [IFC] except SAE."
IFC President Steve DiOrio said that is untrue.
"IFC has mediated on circumstances that happened before and after them," he said.
"We actually moved back their mediation and potential trial because SAE wanted it moved back."
Sigma Alpha Epsilon plans to make a counterproposal today, and if the fraternity cannot reach an agreement with IFC officials, an IFC trial date is set for December 3.
"We believe that when the facts come out in court, it will be known that the brothers acted appropriately and they will be exonerated," Small said.
