Humphrey is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment and criminal mischief. He was placed in Centre County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3 at Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.
The victim who reported the incident was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center for facial injuries sustained in the incident. The other victim, a female resident of the apartment in which the incident occurred, was treated and released with no major injuries, said Officer Dirk Clouse of the university police.
Clouse said he could not comment on whether alcohol was a factor in the incident, but added Humphrey was very cooperative when he was taken into custody.
Penn State spokesman Bill Mahon said Humphrey was removed from university housing due to the seriousness of the allegations and will be referred to the Office of Judicial Affairs. "The normal procedure would be to remove someone from a residence hall or somewhere on campus, and that has been taken care of," Mahon said.
Penn State sports information director Jeff Nelson said that Penn State football coach Joe Paterno had been notified about the incident, but that he would not be available for comment. He also said it would be "inappropriate" for the football team to comment.
Humphrey, a redshirt freshman who was moved from cornerback to wide receiver early in the season, had emerged as one of the Nittany Lions' top receivers. He finished second on the team in receptions with 30 and yards with 410. However, he did not make the trip to Michigan State on Saturday because he violated a team rule. "Humphrey broke a team rule, and I'd rather not get into what it was," Paterno said after the game Saturday.
