Penn State setter Sam Tortorello has been named the Big Ten Women's Volleyball Player of the Week.
The honor is the first such accolade for Tortorello and Penn State's third selection this season. Senior Cara Smith was honored on Sept. 2 while senior Erin Iceman picked up the award on Oct. 6. Tortorello's selection marks Penn State's 31st Big Ten Player of the Week award since joining the conference in 1991.
Tortorello averaged 14.00 assists per game through the two matches, but it was her all-around play that led the Lions to both victories. In a four-game win over Michigan, Tortorello dished out 64 assists while adding six kills, 12 digs and five blocks, two of which were solo efforts.
The following night in five games against Michigan State, Tortorello posted 62 assists, four kills, two aces and 12 digs for her second double-double of the weekend and her 13th of the season. She fell just two blocks shy of her first career triple-double, providing eight stuffs against the Spartans.
With the Lions down 2-1 in the decisive fifth game, Tortorello assisted in three blocks to spark a 9-0 Penn State run to go up 10-2 on Michigan State, finally winning the set 15-8.
