Lady Icers' streak ends

For The Collegian

The University of Rhode Island's women's hockey team did something no one else has done this season to the Penn State Lady Icers' offense: shut it down completely.

URI's sweep of a two-game weekend series in Kingston, R.I., knocked the Lady Icers (7-2-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten.

URI earned a 3-0 win Saturday before scoring four unanswered goals to win Sunday's matchup 4-1.

Penn State took its only lead on Sunday on a goal by junior winger Katie King at midway through the first period.

The Lady Icers stayed in front until URI tied the game midway through the second period.

The Rams (11-1) took the lead on a goal by Heather Scherick with only 45 seconds left in the second period of play.

URI added a pair of insurance goals in the final period.

Penn State sophomore goalie Tara Wheeler faced a total of 79 shots over the weekend, turning back 72. She had 41 saves in Sunday's loss.

The loss means the Lady Icers should be ranked behind URI when the ACHA releases its first regional rankings this Friday.

The Lady Icers will look to regain their winning form when they return home this weekend for a pair of games against a tough University at Buffalo. squad.

The Lady Icers earned a pair of 9-1 wins at Buffalo earlier this month. The games will be played this weekend.
