Football finally makes big plays

Collegian Staff Writer

Penn State was finally able to get one.

Players made plays, some bounces went their way and the Nittany Lions were finally able to capitalize on chances to put points on the board.

With one game remaining, the Lions are not only looking to this week's matchup against Michigan State, but the bigger picture of next season.

"The seniors kept saying that the biggest thing wasn't to win them a game, but to get a win to build for next season," quarterback Michael Robinson said.

"It meant a lot to the guys, especially the underclassmen to know that they cared that much."

Snapping a six-game losing streak on senior day was just the relief the players, coaching staff and fans needed in preparation for the closing of the regular season.

A win over the Spartans would be an uplifting send-off to the offseason in an otherwise dismal year.

"It would give us a lot of confidence and get that losing taste out of our mouth," Robinson said.

"It'll be good to get Penn State back on top."

Lingering questions from the beginning of the season, not the least of which is what position Robinson will play against the Spartans as well as next year, still remain unanswered. Penn State solved a few against Indiana, and hopes to do some more soul searching in the last game in East Lansing.

Day to Remember

Offense - Tony Johnson. Johnson silenced his critics with his three touchdown catches after sitting out two games and playing little against Northwestern.

His on-field chemistry with quarterback Zack Mills looked the best it has all year. After an unmemorable season with off-field distractions, Johnson truly had a memorable final home game at Beaver Stadium, especially in helping his team garner the win against the Hoosiers.

Defense - Paul Posluszny. The true freshman once again displayed his consistency at linebacker with five tackles and a big 15-yard interception return for a touchdown against Indiana.

Posluszny has begun to establish himself as a solid young defensive playmaker and his play in the second half of the season should put him atop the spring practice depth chart at outside linebacker.

Day to Forget

Offense - Joe Paterno. The reason the Penn State patriarch gets the "day to forget" is for his decision not to start Austin Scott at running back.

The freshman had 42 yards on four carries, for an average of over 10 yards per carry. Imagine Scott's contribution had be been given the chance to get the ball 20-30 times. Paterno continues to say that the youngster needs to learn some things on offense, yet Scott continues to make the best of his limited opportunities.

Defense - Penn State Defensive Line. The defensive line gave up over 200 yards to Indiana's BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who ran behind a relatively undersized offensive front.

After a decent showing against Northwestern only a week earlier, the front four were unable to effectively contain the Hoosiers' running game.

Quotable

"I know we're a lot better than the record shows but I came out today fired up because I was really upset after Northwestern because they suck," offensive tackle Levi Brown said after crushing Indiana a week after losing to the Wildcats.

Did you notice?

The Jumbotron showed the PlayStation 2 graphic of Zack Mills throwing a touchdown pass to Kinta Palmer. In reality it was Robinson to Johnson... The trivia question answer was "Walley Richardson," for those of you scoring at home it's "Wally."... The person in the front row wearing a chicken costume.

Extra point

How much of a confidence boost will Penn State's dismantling of a lower tier football team be when the team travels to East Lansing to face the more talented Spartans team?
