Bandwidth is a topic that has yet to come up amidst all the Napster and firewall discussions, and I am quite surprised that no one has mentioned anything thus far.
Now, I am not going to sit here and question President Spanier's leadership and decision-making ability, but I just wanted to question the thought put into this situation. Napster is an off-campus Web server that students will connect to their database and be able to stream music files.
To stream the music, students will still have to download the music file as it plays, in turn consuming a part of our weekly bandwidth allowance. Napster will not allow us to download a music file and store it on our computers. At the same time, a firewall will block the usage of Kazaa and other peer-to-peer file-sharing clients, preventing the download of new songs.
What's next, Rescom sending out workers to format our computers? Maybe I am wrong to jump the gun on the new Napster program; I have yet to try it. But until then, I will be downloading as much as I can before that option is magically taken away.
