Steven A. Shawley, the man convicted of robbing a Choice Cigarettes store and leading police on a high-speed chase, was sentenced to eight to 16 years in prison at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte yesterday.
Shawley was convicted of multiple charges of robbery and criminal conspiracy for stealing $120 from a Patton Township Choice Cigarettes, 2110 N. Atherton St., on Oct. 2 and then fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
Shawley and a conspirator entered the store wearing shirts tied over their heads like bonnets. The men approached the counter and asked the cashier for money, afterward fleeing in an orange vehicle, according to police reports.
A dispatch to other police departments describing the vehicle led to the vehicle being spotted by the State College Police Department on the 1100 block of North Atherton Street.
The vehicle refused to stop, leading the police on a high-speed chase, which eventually ended in an accident at Barnard Street and Prospect Avenue.
Shawley and his companion fled on foot, and Shawley was eventually arrested at State College Area High School.
