Delaware jumped out to an early lead, taking advantage of a shorthanded opportunity to go up 1-0. Luck seemed to be on the Blue Hens' side as a puck that bounced off both a Penn State and Delaware player found its way in. Trailing 2-0 in the second period, the Icers got back into the game when Zuck bounced the puck off of Verdi and cut the lead.
The solid play of Penn State's special teams failed the Icers as they watched their penalty kill units give up four power-play goals. The power-play unit wasn't much better, going 0-6 and giving up a shorthanded goal. Penn State didn't keep its heads down long as it bounced back Saturday behind solid goaltending of Scott Blackman.
"This was a real big win because we couldn't drop two games in a row," Blackman said. "It felt real nice to get [my first shut out] in a big game."
The loss put to rest whispers of an undefeated season for the Icers. But Battista said the shutout was a sign of the team's championship potential.
