However, most problems facing the Nittany Lions yesterday were self-inflicted. The final score hardly tells the tale of a fairly one-sided match in Penn State's favor.
While the Lions managed to put three headers past Robyn Jones, the other 19 that didn't make it in, included a saved penalty kick, which allowed the Knights to remain just one goal back until the 85th minute.
"In the first half, I knew that it was going to be a battle," Drummond said, "but after halftime it was going to be a different game. We did have a lot of opportunities, but I knew we were going to score another one.
We need to concentrate a little better in the final third [of the field]."
Penn State outshot Rutgers 22-3.
The Knights' lone goal was fired nearly 30-yards from the net and found its way into the upper left corner of the goal. Carli Lloyd credited her score to some game notes on Penn State keeper Amanda Brown.
"Our coaches have been telling us that she tends come off of her line a little bit, so I was just trying to chip her and see what happened," Lloyd said.
The tendency was also noticeable in Friday's game with the Midshipmen, whose only goal was scored on a lob over Brown when she was drawn off of the end line.
In that game, the Lions gained goals from four different players and five contributed assists.
The victories propel Penn State into a third round match to be held on Saturday or Sunday at Jeffrey Field. The Lions will face the Texas A&M Aggies who upset Duke yesterday.
