Specter, who is up for re-election next year, thanked the Pennsylvania Builders Association for their contribution to his campaign. He spoke about issues in Iraq and his optimism that the economy is slowly improving.
Specter spoke about how funding for Iraq and anti-terrorism efforts is essential.
"It is better to confront them in Baghdad than in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh or New York City," Specter said. "And it is costly. But the price of liberty has never been cheap."
Specter also discussed his feelings about the state of the economy.
"I’m optimistic, with the high yield, decreasing unemployment claims and last quarter’s performance," he said. "The economy’s performance is cyclical."
He said legislators could do things to improve the economy, such as making tax cuts.
State Sen. Jake Corman, R-Centre, and Citizens for Arlen Specter also conducted a reception for Specter on Friday night.
Specter’s State College visit was his last stop on a local tour Friday. Specter also visited Lycoming and Clinton counties.
