Penn State Police Services is investigating the cause of a fire that occurred at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday in the 10th-floor bathroom of Sproul Hall.
No major injuries resulted from the fire, but some people suffered from smoke inhalation.
Officer Dirk Clouse said the fire started in one of the bathroom's stalls. It was contained within the bathroom and extinguished by members of the Alpha Fire Company.
Clouse said no structural damage to the dorm resulted from the fire. He was unable to give an estimated cost of the damage to the bathroom.
Grant Bacharach (freshman-division of undergraduate studies), a resident of the 10th floor, said police told him the fire began when a roll of toilet paper was ignited. He added that the fire spread to the roll's plastic dispenser.
Smoke caused residual damage to the 10th-floor hallway and dorm rooms, Clouse said.
Police are examining physical evidence that will determine the fire's cause, Clouse said. He would not comment on exactly what physical evidence police were investigating.
Bacharach said he inhaled smoke before being the last resident to exit the hall. Bacharach had slept through the fire alarm and was evacuated by police. He said police treated him for smoke inhalation at their station.
As a result of the smoke, soot flowed from Bacharach's nose, and he suffered from nausea.
"I was pretty sick that night," he said.
Vinny Rome (freshman-liberal arts), another 10th-floor resident, said he was asleep in his dorm room when he heard a fire alarm at about 2:30 or 3 a.m.
"When I stuck my head out, there was a lot of smoke in the hallway," he said.
Smoke seeped into Rome's room and coated the area with soot, he said.
Rome said housing staff members washed students' blankets and shampooed the hallway carpeting. Soot still stained carpeting, and dorm rooms smelled of smoke yesterday.
The 10th-floor bathroom was locked yesterday, forcing Bacharach to go down a floor to shower.
"Everything's full of soot," he said, holding his soap and towel. "They let us look in the bathroom -- it's a mess."
