This is in response to David Roseman's letter ("Student voter turnout not an important issue," Nov. 5). I've heard the argument many times while here at Penn State that student voting doesn't matter because we all leave town in four years anyway. Yet, at the same time, I hear cries that local government isn't sensitive to student needs (i.e. the Beaver Canyon camera issue). If students want to be taken seriously in this area, they need to make the effort and participate. This means voting, this means attending local council meetings, this means being members of the community.
The nature of this entire town would change if students used their numbers and voted. You would see the Borough Council sit up and take notice when students come to them with issues. If you work downtown, or rent an apartment, then you are impacted where it matters the most: your wallet. To say that local government doesn't impact students is naïve, and failing to vote while railing against local officials for not paying proper attention to student concerns is just plain irresponsible.
