Vans brings punk acts for 'Off the Wall Tour'

Collegian Staff Writer

Punk rock will invade Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave., once again on Wednesday when the Vans Off the Wall Club Tour comes to town.

Classic punk-rock groups The Suicide Machines, Avenged Sevenfold, The Unseen and Western Waste have been touring all over the country recently and will meet up in State College to perform.

"Our music is just basic punk rock. It's nothing new or groundbreaking. Just classic punk beats," Mark Civitarese, lead singer of The Unseen said.

Civitarese said the Off the Wall Tour, which has been making its way from California to the East Coast, has been both good and bad. The tour got off to kind of a rocky start due to some problems with advertising. There were people that didn't know about the show in advance, which made for smaller crowds and less revenue.

'Off the Wall'
Who: The Suicide Machines, Avenged Sevenfold, The Unseen and Western Waste
When: Wednesday, doors open at 7:30 p.m., show starts at 8:30
Where: Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave.
Details: Tickets for the all-ages show are $13 in advance and $15 day of show.

Though its had its low points, Civitarese pointed out that shows such as those in Denver and Chicago were excellent and make up for the difficulties. Civitarese was the former drummer and vocalist for The Unseen when the band began playing together about 10 years ago, but eventually switched to just vocals. The group started with just him and the current bass player, and eventually more joined in to create the product fans see today.

The group shares influences such as The Misfits, The Clash, Sex Pistols and Black Flag.

The Unseen came out with a new album, Explode, and Civitarese said sales are going well.

Civitarese is looking forward to sharing the stage with The Suicide Machines after having played with the band at The Warped Tour, and is apprehensive about the show being in a college town.

"A lot of times colleges aren't too good," Civitarese said.

He said many times the show doesn't get advertising off campus, and people don't want to go to a college town to see a show.

Avenged Sevenfold may be rocking with some harder beats than The Unseen.

"It's a little bit of ten different things but it's definitely heavy," band manager Evan Baken said.

He also compared the style of Avenged Sevenfold to that of System of a Down because of how it switches from a very heavy chorus to a more melodic verse, but said the lead singer of Avenged Sevenfold has a better voice.

The group just joined the tour recently because the drummer had a fractured wrist, but is excited to be back out there and playing again, Baken said.
