PSU linemen stepping up after change in positions

Collegian Staff Writer

Redshirt freshmen made the biggest moves on the latest Penn State football depth chart.

Offensive lineman Mark Farris has moved to the second-team left guard position vacated after Tommy McHugh was dismissed from the team. McHugh had replaced Scott Davis, a junior who was lost for the season after dislocating his left ankle in practice four weeks ago.

Patrick Hall, who was a third-team defensive end much of the season, also switched positions. Hall is now behind Derek Wake as the second-string outside linebacker.

Nittany Lions' guard Tyler Reed said Farris, who moved to guard from tackle, is still learning his new position, but has made significant strides.

"He's been from guard to tackle and everything else in between," Reed said. "He still makes some mental mistakes, but he plays hard and he's going to be a really good player."

Reed said other promising young linemen making strides in practice were true freshman Joel Holler, a 6-foot-5, 342-pound tackle who is most likely redshirting this season, and sophomore tackle Andrew Richardson. Richardson, who has played as both an offensive tackle and a tight end this season, has increased his weight to around 290 pounds, Reed said. He is currently listed second behind Levi Brown at left tackle.

Reed said he is slowly getting better but will spend the summer working on getting stronger, on better blocking technique and on following through on blocks. Three of the five starters on the line have at least two years of eligibility left and their best play lies ahead of them.

"The line before us, they played together for two or three years," Reed said. "That's an important thing to try to get the guys together and work as a group ... Now that we have played this year and worked together a little bit, next year is going to be a big year."

Penn State linebacker Derek Wake said he has seen Lamar Stewart about four times since the season began. Stewart, who has two years of eligibility remaining, is redshirting this year after fathering a child.

After talking to the Reading native, Wake said Stewart is doing well and is looking forward to playing again.

"He's got everything under control from what I see," Wake said. "We were talking about it today. It's something he misses. I guess it's one of those things you've done all your life and you're no longer doing it."
