Penn State student Dennis Bennett, 30, was arraigned and released before District Justice Bradley Lunsford yesterday on unsecured $1,000 bail.
Bennett is charged with the sale or transfer of firearms and unsworn falsifications to authorities.
Police said that Bennett, of the 600 block of Vairo Boulevard, attempted to purchase a firearm on Sept. 10 from Wal-Mart, 1665 N. Atherton St., after he was committed to a mental health institution.
Bennett, who was involuntarily committed to the Centre County Mental Health/Mental Retardation Office on Aug. 10 and Sept. 5, signed a form that acknowledged he was never committed by a mental health institution.
That form was used to run a background check through the Pennsylvania State Police, which was denied due to Bennett's record.
A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 12 at Centre County Courthouse.
