Ice Lions defeat Penn with strong performance

Collegian Staff Writer

A team effort is what is needed to win. The Penn State Ice Lions seem to be good at it too.

On Friday night against the University of Pennsylvania the Ice Lions won 8-2, with all eight goals being scored by different players. It is easy to see why Penn State Ice Lions coach Mo Stroemel doesn’t pick out any one player that plays well during the course of a game.

For their efforts they are ranked No. 2 in the Northeast region in the ACHA Division II hockey polls.

As always, with the good comes the bad, but the bad isn’t really horrible considering that the Lions have won eight games in a row to improve their record to 9-2.

"We took a couple of penalties that we shouldn’t have, there were some questionable calls," Stroemel said.

Stroemel said he wants his team to improve the starts of their games, if they don’t they could get in some trouble.

"Some people weren’t up for the game, we just need to come out to play instead of waiting until the second period," Pat McCullough said.

Penn was a formidable opponent for the Lions, who just overwhelmed the Quakers because of their depth. Penn tried to be aggressive and fore-check more in the third period but by then Penn State already had a substantial lead in the game.

The goalies had to deal with a light workload as well. Dan Koletsky played the first two periods and only faced nine shots. Simon Morris worked the third period and face 12 shots. Penn State out shot Penn 33-21.

"Dan had a few scary moments in the first, but then he settled down,” Stroemel said. “I thought they both played well."
