I was very interested when I heard that Penn State Network Television (PSNtv) would be producing a variety of shows that would enable students to display their creativity and talents. What I saw when I tuned in on Tuesday night was anything but interesting. In fact, it was downright offensive. Almost every show I watched had at least one offensive reference to women. For example, the character wearing the "Wild" T-shirt in the show Academic Integrity exhibited all of the qualities of the "unintelligent party girl" stereotype. I may be alone in my thinking, but this is not an image that I want associated with the university that I attend. I am aware of the fact that the network was trying to add a little humor to our lives. I cannot, however, support anything that is so obviously offensive and demeaning to women. There was nothing funny about the messages they sent.
Perhaps the most ironic thing about the lineup was the newscast regarding the university's increased efforts to reduce sexual crimes on campus. A great way to reduce such crimes is to eliminate the perpetual objectification of women as weak, unintelligent sex objects.
