This is in response to Neema Jahdi's letter ("Recent assaults, rapes hurt PSU community," Oct. 29). I would like to comment on a few simple concepts. Rape is inevitable in a community such as Penn State. In fact, the problem is not any worse this year than any other year. However, the women are fighting back this year and reporting the crimes. Between 1 to 6 percent of all sexual assaults and rapes are reported to the police. Jahdi asserts a second misconception by saying, "We never had this from where I am from!" Wrong, you did have this problem.
As for the student athletes and their recent arrests, statistically speaking, I am sure these young men have committed no greater amount of crimes when compared to the average Penn State student. However, news creates readership, especially when the person is a public figure. How many of you picked up the Collegian when you saw the headline about a football player being arrested for drunk driving? Have some compassion; your greatest mistakes are not broadcast on the news or on the front page of a newspaper. How would you feel if that were the case?
