Off-campus students deserve Escort Service

Although I definitely agree that the escort service is a great idea, and I hate to criticize a good thing, I can understand why it is so underused ("Escort service merges with residence security," Oct. 28). I used it the other day for the first time. I would be hesitant to use it again, however. I was kept on the phone for a long time, and then I was basically grilled as to why I wanted an escort and whether I was going to my place of residence. It was sort of intimidating, and although a taxi picked me up and I got to my destination rather quickly, I have heard from others that sometimes the service can take a very long time. If you are waiting outside, it can be just as dangerous standing there waiting.

The main thing I was annoyed with, however, was that the dispatcher told me that he would send an escort this time, but the service is really only for people who are travelling to or from campus. This made no sense to me, because although I live off campus, I am a student who pays tuition. I probably have a greater chance of getting attacked and assaulted walking downtown or on frat row than I would on campus. I don't know how some of these problems could be solved, but I feel that the service should be offered to all students, no matter where they are going.
