The bedlam has begun and it's not even Saturday.
Oklahoma State coach Les Miles has now stirred the proverbial pot for Saturday's showdown in Norman not once, but twice. In his postgame conference after the Cowboys pounded Texas A&M 38-10, he made this statement: "We know we are playing Oklahoma next week and they are the best team in college football, we are told."
It was that last part the, "we are told" , that has drawn the ire of Sooners' fans and players. However, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops didn't get lured into the trap saying that he thinks Miles meant exactly what he said and that he doesn't blame him.
On Monday, Miles added fuel to the already blazing fire.
"One team may be the best team in college football and the other is a damn good football team," Miles said, following that with a dramatic pause. "We're going to play to see which is which."
Don't let Stoops coy retort fool you. Stoops is as cocky as they come and is twice as smart as he is cocky. That's why on Saturday after the Sooners and Cowboys have taken the field, it will be Stoops making the sly remarks. While Miles has defeated Stoops in their two previous meetings, Stoops won't let it happen again. This Sooner team already had their letdown this season when this past Saturday they took Colorado lightly and defeated them 34-20.
Rashaun Woods, Josh Fields and Tatum Bell are the stars for the Cowboys, but they have yet to see a defense that resembles the Sooners. The closest thing they have played to the Sooners' defense was back in their season opener against the Blackshirts of Nebraska. Okie State lost that one, 17-7, and was held to just 183 yards of offense.
It's been seven games since that loss and the Cowboys haven't lost since -- until Saturday when the Sooners and Stoops roll to a three TD-plus victory.
Move Over Buffalo
First I'd like to apologize to all Buffalo Bulls' fans who I told to set their alarm clocks for the year 2004 if they wanted to know when their Bulls were going to get their next win.
The Bulls broke the nation's longest losing streak at 18 with a 26-17 victory over conference rival Ohio. Unfortunately, the Bulls only get to play Ohio once a year.
The Bulls' win means that SMU is now officially the worst team in college football with a 0-8 record. With four games left on their schedule the Mustangs have one legitimate chance at winning a game and that comes on Nov. 15 at home against Rice. With Rice and SMU recently jumping to Conference-USA it looks like the rivalry will continue for many years to come.
Upset of the Week
I think I will go back to the wacky Pac-10 this week. Southern Cal looks unstoppable with Reggie Bush using his 10.4 100-meter dash speed to run all over Pac-10 foes. Washington State looked absolutely terrible against Oregon State with quarterback Matt Kegel throwing five picks and losing two fumbles.
However, they rallied to win the game over the Beavers, 36-30. One team that looked great and another that looks terrible.
I'll take the team that looks terrible -- Washington State (12-point underdogs).
Last Week: My record dropped to 3-5 as Kansas lost its star QB Bill Whittemore in the first quarter and proceeded to lose its dignity, and mine, in a 42-6 loss.
