Bronx native torches men's soccer team

When he scored the second of his three goals on Sunday, Michigan forward and Bronx native Knox Cameron held nothing back in his celebration.

His 6-foot-3 frame leaped high in the air as he blew a kiss to his personal cheering section.

Not surprising. Scoring a couple goals in a pivotal Big Ten game is exciting. Doing it during a rare appearance in front of friends and family is even better.

"I knew my family was coming. There was some pressure to perform, and I was able to shine under that pressure," Cameron said after the Wolverines 4-2 victory over the Penn State men's soccer team. "It was great to have my family here; my dad hasn't seen me play in a long time."

Cameron's family made the three-and-a-half-hour trek from the Bronx and the Big Ten's leading scorer didn't disappoint.

The junior headed a line drive corner kick for his first goal, and sprinted towards the Michigan fans in the western bleachers.

He pointed towards friends and family screaming with joy as his teammates jumped around him in celebration.

His parents were very instrumental in the development of Cameron as a player in his days before becoming a Wolverine, especially since "Bronx" and "soccer" are rarely used in the same breath.

To develop into a better player during his youth, they endured the drive from the Bronx into the intense club soccer climate in northern New Jersey.

The parents that were so important to the development of his early career -- and now so rarely get the opportunity to watch him play -- finally got to see their son play.

"We just want to enjoy this win with him," Maxine Cameron said, as she smiled and hugged her son.

Cameron is a junior, and with next year's Penn State/Michigan game being played in Ann Arbor, there might not be many more chances for him to play in front of his family. If the game was a finale of sorts for Cameron, it could not have been more perfect.
