Quarterback picture remains complicated

Collegian Staff Writer

Insight into the 2003 Penn State football team is a hot commodity these days.

After Saturday's loss against Iowa, in an attempt to acquire insight regarding the Penn State quarterback situation, the media asked Michael Robinson what he expects to happen.

He sighed and said what he could.

"I have no idea."

That seems to be the theme at many positions. Entering the tenth week of the season, questions generated during preseason camp remain unanswered, none of which has been more cogent than the Lions' quarterback situation. Now, even more questions have developed and the uncertainty is thick.

Robinson, who was notified about his starting status against the Hawkeyes as he listened to Penn State football coach Joe Paterno's weekly radio show on Thursday, has been part of a disjointed attempt at a quarterback rotation with redshirt junior Zack Mills now that Mills has returned from an injury sustained earlier in the season against Minnesota.

Robinson's endorsement was lukewarm at best after the game.

"I don't know," Robinson said. "Obviously I want to play and get in, hopefully the rotation can work."

Even more, when asked whether he had any indication to the extent the rotation would be utilized against Iowa, the redshirt sophomore once again displayed a sense of uncertainty.

"No indication," Robinson said. "I knew Zack was going to get in the second quarter, but I didn't know if it was going to be a rotation or it was going to be final."

Michael Robinson runs against Wisconsin earlier this season. Robinson only played three series on Saturday against Iowa.

Despite finding out a day and a half before the Iowa game, Robinson started the game against the Hawkeyes, but had a dismal performance, throwing for no yards on two attempts.

Paterno said he felt Mills could help "settle the team down" after Penn State failed to score after starting in Iowa territory the team's first two offensive series with Robinson as play caller. Mills, who entered the game with two minutes remaining in the first quarter, finished 14-for-25 for 138 yards and a touchdown. It was Mills' first touchdown pass in almost two months.

"It's frustrating, but at the same time, with a coach like Joe Paterno, he's a great coach," Robinson said. "I guess he felt that Zack could make some things happen and he went with Zack and I just have to accept that."

Mills did offer a beacon of enlightenment. He said he felt that Paterno will make things more explicit this week with regards to who will start at quarterback.

"I think [Paterno] will do that early in the week," Mills said. "He'll let us know what's going on. I think I'll be starting, but I don't know."

That remains to be seen.

After the game on Saturday, Paterno's sentiments did not exactly validate Mills' thoughts.

"I didn't have any idea what I was going to do," Paterno said. "And if you ask me what I'm going to do next week, I don't have the slightest idea, so don't even bother asking me the question."
