After reading the article "More bike accessibility part of plan for campus" in Monday's Daily Collegian, I felt I must respond. Contrary to the article's assessment that the "education of cyclists about traffic laws and common courtesy" and more bike paths would help make Penn State's campus more pedestrian friendly, I feel that much of the solution lies in the behavior of the pedestrian. The majority of pedestrians at Penn State have a complete disregard for all traffic laws, crosswalks, cars, buses and bicycles. When crossing the street, they rarely look both ways, and they rarely wait for the crossing signal. If the police want to make an impact on this problem, they need to start giving tickets to jaywalkers. As a cyclist, I follow the traffic laws and stay off the sidewalk. All I am asking is that the pedestrians stay out of the street.
