Ice Lions grab wins over Liberty

Collegian Staff Writer

The zebras earned their worth on Friday and Saturday when the Penn State Ice Lions faced off against Liberty.

The two teams combined for 30 penalties in their two games. This could have been bad for Penn State because opposing power plays have victimized them in recent weeks. But the team responded to Liberty's power plays by shutting them down.

On the flip side Penn State took advantage of their 23 power plays by scoring on five of them. The Ice Lions defeated Liberty 4-3 on Friday night and 7-3 on Saturday night.

The Ice Lions played before crowds they're not accustomed to in Greenberg Ice Pavilion, on Friday Liberty packed in close to 500 fans and Saturday they had around 800. The team didn't let that get to them and prevailed in the end.

"It was probably one of the best team efforts I have seen," said Ice Lions head coach Mo Stroemel. "Not one person carried the team."

In fact eight different players scored for the Lions on their 11 goals. Ryan Tocicki was the only player with multiple goals over the weekend.

The Ice Lions defense cleared the ice in front of goaltender Dan Koletsky so he could clearly see shots. Liberty's premier shooter Jeff Smale was shut down. He didn't record a goal in the series.

Liberty's team, heavy with Canadians, was supposed to be a tough opponent for the Ice Lions, but Penn State was the more disciplined team and didn't want to get into the fights that Liberty did.

"My guys were very restrained, it could have been a lot uglier," said Stroemel. "We took hits and got the puck and went the other way in odd man rushes."

Stroemel said they are getting better and could be tough to beat if they continue to improve.
