Rose sees flaws in volleyball

Collegian Staff Writer

Every victory for the Penn State women's volleyball team has elicited the same reaction.

Following the Penn State Classic, which was the Nittany Lions' home opener, Penn State women's volleyball coach Russ Rose chose to look well beyond his team's trio of weekend victories.

"I'd like to think we could be better in a lot of areas," Rose said.

After a pair of road wins, against Michigan and Michigan State in the squad's Big Ten opener, Rose admitted that he was not entirely satisfied with the way his team was performing.

He said there were things which could have been done better.

"We could have won the matches in three; when you're going five, you could lose," he said. "There's still a long way to go."

And Friday night, after the 3-0 win over Purdue, Rose still didn't give in.

"We're just a volleyball team trying to get better," he said. "I'm not holding my breath on anything other than I know we have a lot of work ahead of us and hopefully we'll play better or more inspired [Saturday]."

But Saturday night, after the women put together their best performance of the season to dominate Indiana in three games, it was finally enough -- at least for the night.

"I thought it was our most complete match to date," Rose said.

"I'm not disappointed with anything, other than the Cubs losing."

The team certainly didn't make it easy to find any disappointment in its performance. Offensively, the women dominated the hitting 0.391 to 0.080. Defensively, the Lions won the blocking battle 11 to 3 and recorded several key digs. And behind the service line, Penn State tallied a season-high nine service aces.

"It was a good team match, it really was," Rose said.

"I have to feel very positive that we can put a good match together like this today."

For the players, being able to put the pieces together for the complete match was simply a matter of time, and nothing more.

"We know inside that we can play better, individually and as a team," senior opposite Erin Iceman said Friday night after the Purdue match. "We see that and we can feel that and we keep pushing towards higher goals."

Despite the elevated level of play on Saturday, the team remains too levelheaded to get ahead of themselves.

They know that with 16 more Big Ten matches, complacency is not going to be an option.

"We definitely want to make sure that we're keeping our level high.

"We're going to continue to keep on improving and each day get better so that we're better to play on the road," Iceman said. "It's one [match] at a time."

But on Saturday night, the one match was against Indiana. And it was enough for the team to simply enjoy the present.

"The things the players need to work on, they still need to work on," Rose said.

"I'd like to celebrate the fact that we played a great match in front of a big crowd and not really talk about things we need to work on right now."

After all, satisfction has been long in coming. Especially for Cubs fans.
