Letter to the Editor
PSU observance policy hurts Jewish students

What if you, and by you I mean any follower of the Christian religion, were told that classes and exams would not be cancelled for Christmas day? You probably would become outraged since this is a holiday you enjoy spending with your family and friends while attending church.

This is the dilemma I along with thousands of other Jewish Penn State students faced on Monday as the holiest day on the Jewish calendar was ignored by Penn State faculty and staff. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is an observation where Jews repent for their sins by fasting, and much of the day is spent praying.

Maybe Penn State administration could respect all beliefs and in the future replace "study days" with days to observe religious holidays.
