Police follow leads in weekend shooting

Collegian Staff Writer

The investigation is continuing for a Penn State student who was shot early Saturday morning on the 1800 block of North Oak Lane, Patton Township Police Department officials said yesterday.

"We have several leads that are being vigorously followed to the best of our ability," Detective Christopher Federinko said.

Police reported that the shooting occurred during a large party, when the victim engaged in an argument with the suspect. The suspect drew a handgun and fired twice at the victim, hitting him once in the back.

"The victim was struck in the middle-left back, and the bullet is still lodged in his back awaiting a decision by doctors," Federinko said.

Police still believe the suspect is from the New York City area due to information witnesses provided. However, Federinko declined to comment on how the witnesses obtained that information.

"It is unknown where the suspect may have fled to," Federinko said. "But we have been in contact with the New York Police Department and will certainly work with them if we get a lead that the suspect has been identified in the area."

No other details are being released about the leads at this time.

Federinko said the name of the victim, who was treated and released from Centre Community Hospital, is being withheld at this time due to the ongoing investigation.

Federinko also declined to comment on how the argument began or if the suspect and victim know each other. There has been no weapon found at this time.

The unknown suspect fled the scene after the shooting, and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and dark jacket, police said.

He is described as a light-skinned black male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a stocky build.

He is in his 20s and has light-colored eyes.

"The investigation will continue until we apprehend a suspect or have exhausted all of our leads," Federinko said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Patton Township police at (814) 234-0987 or 1-800-479-0050.
