Army ROTC overlooked for guarding lion shrine

This is in response to the article written by Kim Sinclair about the guarding of the lion shrine ("Sue Paterno to talk of shrine's guarding," Oct. 3). While the article had good intentions about letting people know why the lion shrine is guarded during Homecoming, it was also misleading and inaccurate when it comes to who, or rather what group, does the "lion's share" of the actual guarding.

The guarding of the lion shrine started back in the late sixties after the prank to lift team spirit. The group that took over the responsibility was not just the Lion Ambassadors, however. In fact, it was actually the cadets of the Army ROTC program led by the members of the Lion's Guard. While the Ambassadors do guard it on Friday night, it is the dedicated cadets of the Army ROTC's Lion's Guard that stand vigil over the lion shrine during the rest of the week leading up to Homecoming. And since then, under their watch, nothing has happened to our Nittany Lion. I thank The Daily Collegian for bringing attention to the story behind guarding the lion shrine. But I also believe that credit should be given to whom it is due, especially since none has been given to them before.
