Letter to the Editor
Though it provides jobs, telemarketing useless

This is in response to Steve Pipino's letter ("Telemarketing affords valuable jobs to many," Oct. 3). To argue that telemarketing should be allowed based upon it providing jobs is an economic fallacy. Just because telemarketing companies provide jobs does not make those jobs useful to society.

As an extended example, lets examine the drug trafficking "job market." Drug trafficking provides valuable jobs in the form of more police and Drug Enforcement Administration agents. Also, it employs more judges to prosecute criminals, construction workers to build the jails, chemists, social workers and even the dealers themselves. The drug trade seems to be a very good economic industry!

However, I doubt anyone would argue that we "need" the drug trade to support the American economy or that we as a society are better off with the drug trade than without it. Quite simply, just because something provides individuals with jobs does not mean those jobs are useful, needed or even appropriate.
