Race raises $1,365 for 2 local charities

For The Collegian

Ninety-one runners came out to the Knights of Columbus Hall, 850 Stratford Drive, to participate in the thirteenth 5K race to benefit the children's department of Schlow Memorial Library and the Tom Kleban Recovery Fund.

Penn State research engineer Martin Mazur, the event's director, said the race drew a decent turnout, considering it was not heavily advertised.

"I would've liked to have broken 100 [runners], but I couldn't have asked for a better day," Mazur said.

The race began at 850 Stratford Drive and continued across Blue Course Drive through the Glenview neighborhood, back to the starting point.

The race, which charged $15 as an entry fee, raised $1,365 to be split between the two charities.

Nicole Sprenkle (senior-chemical engineering) and Tessa Greeno (senior-psychology) entered the race together after seeing registration forms at Rec Hall.

"We had a month to prepare for it and we're kind of nervous. It's our first race," Sprenkle said.

Greeno said the two had been practicing by running three or four days a week, and they entered the race for additional exercise.

On hand for the race was Tom Kleban of Boalsburg, a former Penn State decathlete and pole-vaulter who was paralyzed by a swimming accident in 1989. The Tom Kleban Recovery Fund, which the race benefits, helps pay for Kleban's continuing medical needs.

Kleban earned a master's degree in real estate finance and marketing from Penn State in 1998. He also served as an assistant to Penn State track coach Harry Groves since the time of his accident until last year.

Groves said working with Kleban was great, and he wished he would have stayed as a coach.

Despite his need for a wheelchair, Kleban remains positive about medical developments that might help him walk again.

"You just never know," Kleban said. "You hope for the best and prepare for the worst."

Kleban is currently working for Aris Corporation as a research analyst.

Elizabeth Allen, director of Schlow Memorial Library, said the library has used past donations to purchase children's books and will continue to do so this year. Previously, the race has raised between $300 and $450 each year for the children's department.

Winners of the race were Eamon Brazunas (junior-public relations and advertising) in the men's division with a time of 15:48, and Amy Hartle, a senior at Bellefonte Area High School in the women's division with 23:34.
