Lowering the blood alcohol limit may cause more DUI-related arrests in the short run, however it will reduce the number of repeat offenders, ultimately lowering the amount of DUI-related arrests. The reasoning behind this argument is that once someone is arrested for DUI, they must complete certain requirements. One of these is an alcohol and safe driving awareness class, part of which involves watching "a grieving family whose loved one was killed by a drunk driver," as was suggested in a previous letter ("New blood alcohol limit will not deter criminals," Oct. 1).
The implementation of this new law, which will lower the legal limit for intoxication, will now be discussed in these classes as well, which will inform the DUI offenders that it will be even easier to get another DUI. As a result, it will be less likely that first time offenders will continue to drink and drive.
