Wisecrackers Comedy club to open at Ramada Inn

Collegian Staff Writer

State College finds its funny bone this weekend with the opening of Wisecrackers Comedy Club, located inside the Ramada Inn, 1450 S. Atherton St.

Wisecrackers belongs to a chain of comedy clubs owned by Scott Bruce, working comedian and also emcee of the WSPX game show The Pennsylvania Game.

Bruce said he decided to open up one of his comedy clubs in State College because, "It's a happening little town that doesn't have much else going on outside its borders."

Besides being a pretty happening place, Bruce also said college towns like State College offer a more educated audience for comedians to perform for, which he said is a "comedian's delight."

Comedy Club
Who: Wisecrackers Comedy Club with Scott Bruce, DJ Hazard and Mike Stankiewicz
When: 9 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday
Where: Ramada Inn, 1450 S. Atherton St.
Detail: Tickets are $12

"I can say something like 'the guy that created Cliffs Notes died, but they managed to get his obituary down to six words,' and I'll get a ton of belly laughs from a college town," Bruce said. "In less educated, more rural areas, I'll get a chuckle."

Bruce also said the greatest thing about comedy is it's the most universal form of entertainment out there.

"During a comedy act you can see a table full of elderly people and a table full of college kids howling at the same jokes. You're not going to get that kind of reaction at a punk rock concert."

Bruce said he hopes to cater to the people of the town by bringing in comedians from all over the United States.

The line-up at his comedy clubs usually follows a three-comedian format, the least experienced being at the beginning of the show, and the headliner at the end.

However, since this weekend is the grand opening, Bruce said he would be featuring three different headliners, Mike Stankiewicz, DJ Hazard and himself.

"Mike's got a sense of humor that's been nurtured in the rust belts. He's like a Tom Waits kind of hip cat," Bruce said.

Stankiewicz said he has a clever sense of humor, which is a bit dark sometimes.

"I like to talk about death and religion," he said.

Coming from the opposite end of the spectrum is headlining comedian, DJ Hazard who said he usually tries not to scare his audience.

"I'm bald, 6 foot 3 inches and 300 pounds. The first five seconds I'm on stage, I have to convince people I'm not going to kill them."

Of his own comedic style, Hazard said he has a "refreshing warped perspective," and he sees stand-up comedy as a "forum for vocabulary mischief."

Hazard really enjoys performing for a college audience.

"College students are so refreshingly enthusiastic. They like energy, honesty and someone that comes to be with them," he said.

"If you bring your best stuff to the table, you'll come away with a great show."

Shows for Wisecrackers are tomorrow and Saturday at 9 p.m., with a $12 charge.
