Lambda Delta Omega is not a lesbian sorority

Due to paraphrasing of "quotes," there may be some misconceptions about my sorority, Lambda Delta Omega, from a recent Daily Collegian article ("Fraternity for gays not found at PSU," Sept. 26).

First and foremost, we are not a lesbian sorority, we are an alternative one. Secondly, members of our sorority do not need to be "out" in any manner. In fact, throughout the years, we have had many straight sisters.

We provide a safe, alternative social environment for women, by women and about women. This means all women, including straight women and gay women who do not wish to be "out." Unfortunately, many people do assume that a person must be "out" in both a social and academic setting in order to join this type of greek organization and I feel that this is one reason that we have problems recruiting.

I would also like to clarify that Delta Lambda Phi did not go inactive due to lack of effort. Sadly, the time and effort required to keep such an organization together is more than most students can afford. I am greatly pleased to see greek life options for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and ally students at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Virginia.
