My Opinion
Athlete, role model Rix should show respect for handicapped

I'd love to play football, especially quarterback. But that's never going to happen. And I'm sure Chris Rix would never like to be handicapped.

So I ask you Chris, why park in the handicapped parking spot?

For those who haven't guessed, I am handicapped, and very bitter toward this so-called role model. Using a wheelchair to move across campus is no easy task. The sidewalks on this campus are like the roads in Pennsylvania -- full of potholes and always under construction.

Do you know how many times I have fallen out of my chair on this campus?

Neither do I. I've lost count.

My guess is that Rix was just being lazy and trying to pull a fast one. And you wouldn't think an able-bodied football player at a Division I school would try to do that. Wait, who am I kidding? Rix probably figured that since he has played football he would not get in trouble and figured it wouldn't be problem.

In fact, he said just that.

"There were four handicapped spots. I thought I'd be OK for an hour," Rix said. "I definitely made a mistake. I definitely regret it and shouldn't have parked there."

No kidding. I don't care if it was a whole freakin' lot of handicapped spots. Obviously Rix's "college education" isn't helping because he apparently can't read signs.

Several times last year when it snowed basically every day, I often drove to class because the sidewalks were horrible. Had Rix been at Penn State I probably wouldn't have made it to class because all the spots would have been taken. Now granted it doesn't snow in Florida, but that's not the point.

"I definitely made a mistake in trying not to be late for class," said Rix, following the Seminoles' practice Monday night. "I parked somewhere I shouldn't have."

This is the same Chris Rix that was late for an exam and just shrugged it off on personal problems. Face it, you're in college -- people are late for class all the time. I even have been late to class every once in a while. You figure out what you missed and move on.

He also explained that he helps out an elderly disabled woman and that was why he has the handicapped parking sticker.

Seriously, Chris, you help the woman and then you turn around and do that? If you went to the grocery store and parked there, you could be denying this same woman that you help a parking spot to buy her groceries, just so you're not late for dinner.

Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden said he would handle the discipline issue and let the police handle the $100 fine. Last season Bowden benched Rix for missing an exam and missing a team meeting. Now I hear that he breaks a law and he is still going to start against Duke this weekend. Rix commented that his only punishment this week has been extra running time each morning. I knew people that did that as a punishment in high school for performing poorly in practice.

This happened at UCLA five years ago and 10 players were taken to court and pleaded no contest, but received two-game suspensions by the school.

I would like to see Bobby Bowden and Chris Rix move across campus in wheelchairs so they can see how much of a hassle it can be especially when it rains or snows (again I know it doesn't snow in Florida). The least I would like to see is Rix sit out a quarter or half. The Seminoles are playing Duke, and I could quarterback against Duke.

For those that don't know, two students saw Rix exit the vehicle, knew it was Rix and started yelling at him to move his SUV. Rix ignored them. They called campus police and left a note on his car. Campus police then immobilized his car. This past Tuesday Rix was ticketed again for parking in an "outpatient only" spot at a university clinic.

Rix must be trying to tick a lot of minority people off. First he did it to the handicapped, then the elderly.

It's not often that people will take a stand against somebody, especially when football is involved. To the students who saw Rix doing this, I applaud you.
